Synopsis
The action takes place during the first Carlist war in Maestrat (the Diccionario de la Zarzuela indicates the second, which took place between 1846/9, although this must be a slip of the tongue, as it correctly refers to it as the seven years: 1833/40). The work is a military tale in which a soldier steals some jewels from the Virgin of the Monastery of Lucena del Cid to give them to his bride, and when he is identified he is condemned to death. In the zarzuela the ending changes, as Cascales ‘the joy of the battalion’, grateful to Rafael Montoya, the thief who had saved his life in combat, intervenes in the case claiming that it was the Virgen de las Angustias – the one from his Granada – who gave him the jewels for Dolores, introducing the idea of a miracle which the Church and the army dare not deny, despite the fact that in the future any soldier who receives miraculous gifts will be shot.
